Middleborough Times newspaper columnist  Peyton MacGruder, is used to getting feedback from her many faithful readers but she is taken aback when a letter arrives from Eve Palmer,  an elderly woman who does not mince words.  Eve questions Peyton’s  advice about when to “take a chance on love” and challenges her to a meeting  to discuss the columnist’s “misguided opinion” that caution should trump passion. Peyton, sensing  an opportunity for another thought-provoking column, is more than happy to oblige.

But Peyton has more to deal with than work-related deadlines and disgruntled readers and soon finds herself both confronting her past, and having to choose between Christine, the daughter she gave up for adoption 19 years earlier and her relationship with sportswriter, King Danville.  Peyton tries to reassure her daughter that nothing will ever come between them again but her actions may ultimately lead her to lose the man she loves.

Although distraught over the predicament she finds herself in with Christine and King,  Peyton continues to be intrigued by Eve and after an initially tense first meeting, gradually gets to know the woman and her heartbreaking story of love, duty and ultimately, regret.

Peyton decides to dig deeper into the elderly woman’s past  and eventually discovers important information but when presents  Eve with her findings and what could be a second chance at love, a terrified Eve refuses to take action.

As Peyton tries to reconcile her feelings of love and duty toward her daughter with the love she feels for King, and Eve faces the possibility of finally being able to make amends for her past, it appears both women have secrets in their past that they are reluctant to confront. They soon learn that life often offers second chances at love but one must be brave enough to take them
